Seven Grandfather Teachings

Gikendamowin      -        Wisdom

Wisdom is gained through experience and knowledge.  To have wisdom is to know the difference between right and wrong, and to apply these qualities to your daily life.  The animal of wisdom is the Sabe.

Debwewin         -          Truth

To know all things is to know truth. The beaver represents truth.

Manaajiiwewin         -         Respect

Respect is an attitude.  To honour and listen to your elders, parents and teachers is a sign of respect.  The animal representing respect is the Bison/Buffalo.

Zaagiiwewin       -        Love

Love is an emotion that is the driving force of all life.  With love, all things upon Mother Earth thrive and grow.  To know love is to find peace.  The animal or love is the eagle.

Dabasenimowin        -         Humility

Humility is to live your life free from arrogance, not to be boastful, and to have a modest sense of your own worth.  The animal for humility is the wolf.

Gwayak Bimaadiziwin    -  Honesty/Honour

Honesty means not to cheat or lie or steal.  Living your life in an honest way keeps things simple and peaceful.  The animal for honesty is the turtle.

Songidewewin          -            Courage

Courage is being brave in the face of life's problems. Daily challenges take courage to overcome.  Never give in and never give up.  The animal for courage is the bear.

It is important to note that many of you viewing this may have different animals for the grandfather teachings.  This is important because although animals may be different, the messages are still the same and are what we should all strive to be each and every day.
